We reached the final competition day for Wilson HELLAS International 2014. Many people once more gathered to watch the players who reached the final stage. Unfortunately due to injury of Mikkel Mikkelsen (DEN) at men’s doubles there were only four finals. So, the other Danish pair of M. Christiansen &David Daugard won the gold and of course the prize money.
The dominance of Turkish women’s badminton players proved to be true only at double’s where Ozge Bayrak & Neslihan Yigit won the Russian pair of E.Komendrovskaja & Victoriia Vorobeva.
The Bulgarian player Linda Zetchiri won the women’s single final versus Chloe Magee from Ireland and proved that fairly she was number one of the draw.
But Sam Magee & Chloe Magee seeded nr 1, got the gold after winning the Bulgarian’s Blagovest Kisyov & Dimitria Popstoikova at mixed doubles.
The upset of the men’s singles continued with the seeded nr 8 Kim Bruun (DEN), win at the final match against Michal Rogalski (4) from Poland.
The prize giving ceremony was attended by Mr Richard Vaughan, Director of Communication for Badminton Europe, Mr Christos Meglas, President of the Regional Serres Chambers, Mr Dimitris Giannakis Vice President of the Regional Serres Chambers, the Head Director of EUROBANK (sponsor of the tournament) Mr Konstantinos Tokantzoglou and Mrs Xatzina Victoria President of Hellenic Badminton Federation.
Hopefully next year’s tournament will be as good as that but with typical Greek sunny weather.
Yours in Sport,
